Celebrating Women in STEM

Huningue, France – International Day of Women and Girls in Science aims to recognize the essential role of women and girls in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), while encouraging younger generations to pursue careers in these fields. It is celebrated annually on February 11, an initiative established more than ten years ago by UNESCO, which works to promote the place of women in science.

At Firalis Molecular Precision (FMP), we wish to join in this celebration by supporting the visibility of women in scientific innovation and inspiring young female students to consider careers in science.

To mark this day, we interviewed three scientists to share their career paths, what inspired them to pursue this path, and to leave an inspiring message for girls who would like to follow in their footsteps.

Let’s Meet Our Inspiring Women in Science!

Isabelle Reymond, Scientist Biobank Engineer, shares with us her story:  “I have always loved science, especially biology, even from a very young age. I always wanted to have a career related to my passion for observing cells and living organisms. This passion was particularly encouraged by my high school biology teacher. After obtaining a PhD in science, I continued in fundamental research at universities in France and abroad, then moved on to applied research in the pharmaceutical industry in Switzerland, and finally to more clinical research in the field of biomarkers at Firalis Molecular Precsion. My diverse skills and experience in several areas of biology have allowed me to adapt to a wide range of roles.

Based on my career path, I would tell young girls not to be afraid to pursue science, to let themselves be guided by what they love and what motivates them. Fearlessly seizing the opportunities that com our way and that allow us to diversify our experience is crucial to advancing our knowledge in this field.”

Delphine Balaramane, PhD, Bio-informatician

Delphine Balaramane, Bio-informatician, shares her own experience: “As a trained bioinformatician, I have built my career at the intersection of biology and computer science, a field in which women are still underrepresented. During my thesis, I used bioinformatics approaches to analyze complex biological data and explore regulatory mechanisms in cancer.

The desire to make sense of data and the opportunity to contribute, in my own small way, to a better understanding of diseases guided my career choice.

To those considering a career in science, I would say:  Science needs different perspectives and women who take their place. Don’t be afraid to follow your passion, even if you started somewhere else. Try and go for it! It can lead you to exciting and innovative projects.”

Julie Ueberschlag, Laboratory technician, mentions: “Since middle school, I have been fascinated by science, especially hands-on laboratory experiments. That’s when I was able to start doing small experiments, beginning with pH-Test and measurement. I was also able to participate in a small team project, where we had to research a topic of our choice, take notes on the orders to be placed accordingly, conduct the experiments, and finish with a report, without forgetting traceability.

These discoveries naturally led me to continue a high school diploma in Laboratory Science and Technology, followed by a technical degree to become a lab technician. Even in classes with a lot of boys, I found my place and was able to fully develop my skills.

Science progresses when everyone moves forward together as a team

Julie Ueberschlag, Laboratory technician
A huge thank you to Isabelle, Julie and Delphine for sharing their inspiring journeys and experiences. Thank you also to all the other women at FMP who contribute to scientific innovation every day. You are a true source of inspiration for generations to come!
